After a brief hibernation over the past few months in chilly Charlottesville, the KA
Θ blog is back in action with lots of news from a Thetaful weekend last week!
We kicked off the weekend with a lovely Parent’s Formal at The Boar’s Head Inn on Friday night. The games began at 6:30pm, when buses filled with glammed-up Thetas and their entourages (dates and parents) departed from Beta Bridge. Cocktail hour for our of-age KATs ran from 7:15-8:15, and delicious hors d’oeuvres were also served. From 8:30-9:30, we enjoyed a buffet-style feast, followed by a montage of Delta Chi photos from the past year. At 9:45, the band took to the stage, covering such Theta-favorites as Earth Wind and Fire’s September and Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl. Then it was time to put on our dancing shoes and hit the floor! A huge thank you to Christine Herik (‘11) for organizing such an awesome event.

On sunny Saturday morning, some of our more-masochistic members roused themselves bright and early to run in the Charlottesville 8k, half-marathon or marathon on behalf of Every Yard for Yeardley. The team raised over $18k for the One Love Foundation and ran a cumulative distance of over 500,000 yards in honor of Yeardley Love. Special congratulations to Isabel Bacon and Spencer Davis (’11) for completing the half marathon. Great job, everyone!
After the race, hundreds of UVa students—Thetas and non—and members of the Charlottesville community flocked to the KA fraternity house for our 16th Annual Pancake Breakfast. The breakfast raised $3,000 for the Piedmont branch of our national philanthropy, Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA. The CASA Association is a network of 1,000 program offices that recruits, trains and supports volunteers to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children in the courtroom and other settings. The breakfast featured scrumptious pancakes, fruit and other breakfast wares, as well as a raffle with such prizes as an iPad 2, Beats by Dr. Dre headphones and gift certificates donated by local stores and restaurants. When we had had our fill of pancakes, the women of Delta Chi headed over to the Snyder Tennis Courts near Memorial Gym for the First Annual One Love Foundation Tennis Tournament. The tournament, hosted by the UVA Women’s Lacrosse team and alumni, raised money for the One Love Foundation, established in honor and memory of Yeardley Love. Thirty-two mixed doubles teams participated in the competition—many of them anchored by current Delta Chis—and raised over $1,000 for the foundation. Across the street from the Tennis Tournament, at Carr’s Hill Field, the First Annual Mallette-Love Memorial Lacrosse Tournament was in full swing all day. This seven-on-seven tournament, organized by the Kappa Alpha Order at UVa, was held to honor Lee Mallette and Yeardley Love. Profits went to the One Love Foundation, with the aim of bringing sports like lacrosse and their vast benefits - held dear by both Mallette and Love - into underprivileged communities as part of a character based program.

On Sunday, the sun was shining and the weather was sweet as the Delta Chi’s relaxed after a productive and wonderful weekend of activities. Then, on Monday, it was back to reality. In chapter, we honored Isabel Bacon (‘11) for Scholarship for publishing an article in UVa’s Wilson Journal of International Relations, Ashley Badesch (’14) for Personality in recognition of her help to Theta during Sigma Chi’s Derby Days Philanthropy last week, Cameron McManus (’12) for Presentation after her eloquent Interview, regarding Pancake Breakfast, on NBC29 and Christine Herick (‘11) for Leadership in appreciation of her fabulous organization of Parent’s Formal. Congratulations, girls, you deserved it!
